As our faithful readers are aware, we preface many of our postings with a quotation that feels appropriate to the subject matter. Our critics scoff, claiming the practice to be one of smoke and mirrors, done only to associate our humble scribblings with the words of much greater men and women. We prefer to think of it as a tip of the hat as it were, to the spirit of so many personalities that live on within the simple combinations of sound and word.
There are many resources to find quotations in print and online. Online can be as easy as doing a keyword search of the speaker or subject matter along with the words ‘quote’ or ‘quotation’. There are also many websites which have compiled large lists. A few we like are:

  1. The above post sent me sifting through my three volume set of the Essays of Montaigne. (The 1925 George B. Ives translations with comments by Grace Norton)Although unable to find and formulate the direct quote (rabbit trails led me off)I recall his opinion on the subject of quoting others was that he did not mind at all “shining with another man’s light” especially if it communicated
    better than he, what was to be said.
