Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson
By David Stilwill on Nov 29, 2007 in Children's Books, Featured, Fiction
But, luckily, he kept his wits and his purple crayon…
Good old Harold, living proof that quick thinking and imagination will take a person far in this world. Equipped only with his trusty purple crayon he journeys through a landscape of creativity - into forests, across oceans, through the sky in a balloon. A seashore picnic of his favorite pies is shared with a deserving moose and porcupine, before continuing on to find his way home and into a snug bed cheerfully lit by the light of the faithful moon.
Another children’s classic, originally published in 1955, is the first of several stories of Harold’s adventures. A guaranteed delight for kids of all ages.

Harold is pretty cool. Not afraid to venture out there and almost from the start veers from the the straight and narrow to adventure on the road not taken.
Facing his personal demons (a dragon he drew himself) he falters slightly but only enough to show he is human and afterwords shows the strength of a true survivor, pulling himself from the depths of the ocean and quick wittingly remedying a plunge from a towering mountain top.
I have not read any of the other Harold and the Purple Crayon books but Harold at the North Pole looks good and there are several others to check out as well.
Good Stuff!
