Give Your Children The Gift of Reading

Give the gift of reading” I would be most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves.”
Anna Quindlen

Technology everyday is becoming more pervasive in children’s lives. While this is not necessarily a bad thing - movies, television, video games & communication devices all compete for a child’s time besides the busy schedule of the average modern family.
We here at Adventure Bookshelf believe strongly in the many benefits of reading and encourage it as one of the great gifts to give your kids.
Books can teach lifelong skills, offer positive role models, stimulate imagination as well as strengthen basic learning and cognitive skills. Spelling, writing and speaking all benefit from regular reading while offering children to learn more about the world around them. Here are a few tips to help you and your kids to read more:

  • Start young: Read to your baby - There are countless excellent books for very small children. Look for books that are brightly colored with lots of pictures and good rhythm.
  • Stay with it: As children grow continue to advertise the joys of a good book. Share story hour and bedtime stories, when they are old enough let your child read to you. Provide an atmosphere where there are a lot of age appropriate books and give kids the opportunities to choose their favorite titles. Visits to the library and local bookstores are of course an excellent resource for this. Ask for recommendations as well as inquire about any story hours or children’s reading programs.
  • Pop culture tie-ins: Many popular movies and videos have companion books which were either published before or after. Though these may vary in quality it can be good way for a child to explore a favorite story or character in the pages of a book.
  • Reading is fun: This may be most important. It should be fun for everyone involved- encourage don’t insist. Share this fun with others - other family members, family friends and your kids friends. It’s a good thing, we promise.
